Palmatine is a protoberberine alkaloid isolated from medicinal herbs such as Coptis chinensis. It is a selective toposomerase I and II poison. The sedative effect of palmatine is related to its ability to inhibit dopamine biosynthesis. Palmatine is a vasodilator that reduces [Ca2+].
