[edit] Carbohydrate Name

N-propionyl substituted Neisseria meningitidis group B capsular polysaccharide

[edit] Carbohydrate Class

Capsular polysaccharide

[edit] Source Microbe

Group B Neisseria meningitidis

[edit] Basic Structure

It is a homopolymer of α(2-->8) sialic acid

[edit] Proposed functions

This capsular polysaccharide is an important virulence determinant. Serum antibodies to the group B polysaccharide confers protection against disease by activating complement-mediated bacteriolysis and/or opsonization. It leads to immunologic tolerance induced by prenatal exposure to host polysialyated glycoproteins

[edit] Antigenic Nature used to produce antibodies

Whole cells

[edit] Carrier Name

nil

[edit] Conjugation Method

nil

[edit] Antibodies

Mab 735D4

[edit] Antibody type and class

IgG2a

[edit] Assay System

ELISA, Immunoelectrophoresis and immunodiffusion

[edit] Cross-reactivity

This Mab reacted with with all E. coli K1 and group B meningococcal strains tested but did not react with E. coli strains having capsular types K12, K13, K14, and K92; and group A and C meningococci

[edit] Proposed epitopes

The epitope was proposed to consist of repeating α(2-->8)-linked Neu5Ac units

[edit] Proposed Utility

This antibody is an important addition to the analyticaln tools available for the study of the structure and function of the E. coli K1 and meningococcal B capsules
