[edit] Carbohydrate Name

N-propionyl substituted Neisseria meningitidis group B capsular polysaccharide

[edit] Carbohydrate Class

Capsular polysaccharide

[edit] Source Microbe

Group B Neisseria meningitidis

[edit] Basic Structure

It is a homopolymer of α(2-->8) sialic acid

[edit] Proposed functions

This capsular polysaccharide is an important virulence determinant. Serum antibodies to the group B polysaccharide confers protection against disease by activating complement-mediated bacteriolysis and/or opsonization. It leads to immunologic tolerance induced by prenatal exposure to host polysialyated glycoproteins

[edit] Antigenic Nature used to produce antibodies

a patient suffering from IgM lambda monoclonal gammopathy

[edit] Carrier Name

nil

[edit] Conjugation Method

nil

[edit] Antibodies

Mab NOV

[edit] Antibody type and class

IgM

[edit] Assay System

Ouchterlony Gel Diffusion, ELISA, invivo protection assays

[edit] Cross-reactivity

This Mab reacted with group B meningococcal and E. coli K1 capsular polysaccharides and did not react with a(2 --> 9)-linked poly-N-acetylneuraminic acid, the capsular polysaccharide of the group C meningococcus, nor with the capsular polysaccharide of E. coli K92 or K100. It also crossreacts with polynucleotides and denatured DNA

[edit] Proposed epitopes

The epitope was proposed to consist of α(2-->8)-linked poly-N-acetylneuraminic acid

[edit] Proposed Utility

This Mab is protective against E. coli in newborn rats
