[edit] Carbohydrate Name

Exopolysaccharide xanthan

[edit] Carbohydrate Class

Miscellaneous

[edit] Source Microbe

Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris 646

[edit] Basic Structure

It consists of a β1-->4 glucose polymer, i.e. a cellulose backbone, with β1-->3 substituted trisaccharide side-chains of (mannose-β1-->4 glucuronic acid-α-1-->2-mannose-β-1-->3)- on alternate glucose residues. The side-chain is variably acylated. The inner mannose may have an O-6 acetyl group and the terminal mannose a 4,6- bound pyruvate ketal

[edit] Proposed functions

The exopolysaccharide xanthan from Xanthomonas campestris is an interesting carbohydrate polymer, with striking rheological properties which make it useful as a food additive (gelling agent) and also as a potential vehicle in enhanced oil recovery

[edit] Antigenic Nature used to produce antibodies

Xanthan

[edit] Carrier Name

nil

[edit] Conjugation Method

nil

[edit] Antibodies

Mab D1

[edit] Antibody type and class

IgM

[edit] Assay System

ELISA

[edit] Cross-reactivity

This Mab was specific to Xanthan and did not cross-react with Cellulose

[edit] Proposed epitopes

The specificity was mainly against the side-chain of xanthan. This Mab was assumed to be directed against the nonsubstituted trisaccharide with the inner mannose-glucuronic acid being immunodominant

[edit] Proposed Utility

This Mab could be useful for structural studies, for detection purposes in commercial and agricultural settings, and for serological typing purposes
