List of proteins specific to M. tuberculosis

A protein is specific to Mtu if it has no near orthologs in other species. To find such proteins, we used the OMA database. The OMA definition of ortholog is, however, quite strong[1], so exclusion from the following list doesn't mean there aren't homologs with the same function and a certain similarity score in other strains/species.

According to the database version 2009-Oct, there are about 100 orthologs specific in such sense to M. tuberculosis.

It turns out that trying to use OMA groups for the purpose of separating species-specific proteins is using the wrong tool. An example are the two proteins UniProt P0C5C3 and UniProt A5U030. While they have identity score 100 when blasted, they are in different OMA groups ([2] and [3]). It's not clear why this should be so. In general, the OMA groups certainly seem to be too small.
