Carbohydrate Name

Capsular Vi polysaccharide

Carbohydrate Class

Capsular polysaccharide

Source Microbe

Salmonella typhi

Basic Structure

The salmonella Vi Capsular polysaccharide is a linear homopolymer of α[1-->4]-O-acetyl-N-acetyl-galactosaminuronic acid

Proposed functions

It is an important virulence factor. The Vi capsule shields the bacteria against phagocytosis by its surface negative charge properties and by covering cell-envelope components sensitive to serum opsonins

Antigenic Nature used to produce antibodies

Heat killed bacteria and purified Vi polysaccharide

Carrier Name

nil

Conjugation Method

nil

Antibodies

Mab MATy-V5

Antibody type and class

IgM

Assay System

inhibition enzyme immunoassay

Cross-reactivity

This Mab was specific to Vi antigen

Proposed epitopes

N/A

Proposed Utility

This Mab was shown to be a useful serotyping agent by correct identification in slide agglutination tests of 32 clinical isolates of all the S. typhi and other serogroup D salmonellae among a total of 140 bacterial isolates representing eight different Enterobacteriaceae genera tested
