Contents

Carbohydrate Name

Capsular polysaccharide

Carbohydrate Class

Capsular polysaccharide

Source Microbe

Escherichia coli K1 strain

Basic Structure

It consists of a homopolymer of α(2-->8)-linked sialic acid residues

Proposed functions

It is an important virulence factor

Antigenic Nature used to produce antibodies

Whole cells

Carrier Name

nil

Conjugation Method

nil

Antibodies

Mab HmenB1

Antibody type and class

IgM

Assay System

ELISA, flow cytometry and bactericidal assay

Cross-reactivity

This Mab cross-reacted with Neisseria meningitidis Group B capsular polysaccharide and EV36 which is an E. coli K-12 strain possessing the genes for K1 capsular polysaccharide production and expresses non-acetylated α (2-->8) polysaccharide just like Neisseria meningitidis group B capsular polysaccharide. This Mab also reacted on the surface of human neuroblastoma cell line, CHP-134

Proposed epitopes

α(2-->8)-linked units of N-acetylneuraminic acid residues seemed to be the part of the epitope

Proposed Utility

N/A
