Carbohydrate Name

Lipoologosaccharide band A of the LPS

Carbohydrate Class

Lipopolysaccharide

Source Microbe

Bordetella pertusis 325

Basic Structure

N/A

Proposed functions

The LOS of B. pertussis exhibits biological activities similar to those of endotoxins from other gram-negative bacteria, including pyrogenicity, toxicity, induction of the Shwartzman reaction, induction of tumor necrosis factor production, and adjuvant properties

Antigenic Nature used to produce antibodies

partially purified preparations of fimbriae from B. pertussis 325

Carrier Name

nil

Conjugation Method

nil

Antibodies

Mab E8D8B1

Antibody type and class

IgG3

Assay System

Immunoblotting

Cross-reactivity

Four strains of Bordetella bronchiseptica and three strains of Bordetella parapertussis were not agglutinated, nor were other gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, N.meningitidis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Salmonella typhimurium, and Haemophilus influenzae

Proposed epitopes

N/A

Proposed Utility

This Mab specifically agglutinated the bacteria. It could be useful in establishing a better-defined serotyping system for B. pertussis in which LOS A might be considered a typing antigen. This Mab can also be useful for the estimation of contaminating levels of endotoxin in vaccine preparations and for further studies on the structure of B. pertussis LOS.
