Carbohydrate Name

Galactomannan

Carbohydrate Class

Miscellaneous

Source Microbe

Aspergillus fumigatus

Basic Structure

Galactomannan is composed of a branched core containing α(1-->2)- and α(1-->6)-linked mannose, with β(1-->5)galactofuranose and/or β(1-->4)galactopyranose moieties linked linearly in side chains terminated by galactofuranose nonreducing end units

Proposed functions

Galactomannan is a major cell wall component in Aspergillusspecies and can also be secreted into the medium as a component of the exoantigen. The galactomannan is immunogenic and polyclonal antibodies against it have been used in antigen detection for the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis, and in the detection of fungal contamination in foodstuffs

Antigenic Nature used to produce antibodies

cold alkali extract of mycelium

Antibodies

Mab 1

Antibody type and class

IgM

Assay System

Indirect Enzyme Immunoassay, immunofluorescence, Preciptin assay

Cross-reactivity

This antibody was cross-reactive with C.albicans

Proposed epitopes

Oligogalactoside side chain

Proposed Utility

This antibody can be used to detect circulating antigen in the serum of patients with invasive aspergillosis by ELISA inhibition.
