Tetanus toxoid
Tetanus toxoid is a vaccine used to prevent tetanus (also known as lockjaw). It is an active immunizing agent prepared from detoxified tetanus toxin that produces an antigenic response in the body, conferring permanent immunity to tetanus infection.

It is derived from the tetanospasmin produced by Clostridium tetani and causing tetanus.

Multiple doses of tetanus toxoid are used by many plasma centers in the United States for the development of highly immune persons for the production of human anti-tetanus immune globulin (Tetanus Immune Globulin (TIG), HyperTet (c)), which has replaced horse serum type tetanus antitoxin in most of the developed world. It is prescribed for primary active immunization against tetanus, generally in combination with diphtheria and pertussis vaccines.

The most serious adverse effect is hypersensitivity. Pain and inflammation at the site of injection may occur.
