[edit] Carbohydrate Name

Lipopolysaccharide

[edit] Carbohydrate Class

Lipopolysaccharide

[edit] Source Microbe

Bordetella pertusis 1414

[edit] Basic Structure

B. pertusis LPS is resolved electrophoretically into two bands, a slowly migrating band designated LOS A and a fast-migrating band designated LOS B. These two species differ in molecular weight as three N-acetyl amino sugars found on LOS A are not present on LOS B

[edit] Proposed functions

The LOS of B. pertussis exhibits biological activities similar to those of endotoxins from other gram-negative bacteria, including pyrogenicity, toxicity, induction of the Shwartzman reaction, induction of tumor necrosis factor production, and adjuvant properties

[edit] Antigenic Nature used to produce antibodies

B. pertusis LPS

[edit] Carrier Name

nil

[edit] Conjugation Method

nil

[edit] Antibodies

Mab P1P3

[edit] Antibody type and class

IgM

[edit] Assay System

ELISA and Immunostaining

[edit] Cross-reactivity

This Mab did not cross-react with the B. pertusis variant strain A100 but cross-reacted with a B. bronchiseptica LPS and B. parapertussis LPS

[edit] Proposed epitopes

The epitope was proposed to be terminal sugar units nonacetylated glucosamine substituted with L-glycero-b-manno-heptose, present in the 'core' of the B. pertussis LPS. The carbon atoms 3,4, and 6 of this glucosamine unit could be involved in the epitope

[edit] Proposed Utility

This Mab can be useful for rapid typing of Bordetella in clinical isolates and can be used to detect antigenic modifications in LPSs from variant B. pertassis strains, or from related Bordetella species (B. parapertassis, B. bronchiseptica
