Streptococci

Streptococcus is a genus of spherical Gram-positive bacteria belonging to the phylum Firmicutes and the lactic acid bacteria group. They are oxidase- and catalase-negative, and many are facultative anaerobes.

Scientific classification
Kingdom Bacteria
Phylum Firmicutes
Class Bacilli
Order Lactobacillales
Family Streptococcaceae
Genus Streptococcus

Surface Characteristics

Its cell wall consist of a basic backbone of the following residues: -3-β-D-Galp-(1-->4) -β-D-Glcp[branched to 1-->4-D-Glp-α-D-NeuNACp]-(1-->6)-β-D-GlcNAcp-1-

Pathogenic Activity

Streptococcus species are responsible for many cases of meningitis, bacterial pneumonia, endocarditis, erysipelas and necrotizing fasciitis.
