July 8, 2008: Interesting article on Open Source Drug Discovery: Could you invent a drug for free? No. It costs on average almost $1 bn to get a new drug launched. Although much of that cost comes from counting all the failures along the way, since for every 150 drug discovery projects that get started only one, makes it to market.

June 25, 2008: GSK's Big Bang on open drug discovery: It was unexpected and went almost unnoticed. Last Friday, pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline [Get Quote], the world's second largest drug maker, announced in Philadelphia that it was donating an important slice of its research on cancer cells to the cancer research community to boost the collaborative battle against this disease.

April 16, 2008: India takes an Open Source Approach to Drug Discovery (Cell, Vol. 133, 201-203, 18 April 2008) Open source software may have been around for 17 years, but using an open source model to speed up drug discovery is a relatively new idea. This month, India is launching a new open source initiative for developing drugs to treat diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV-AIDS.
