Fluorescein is a common fluochrome dye; a yellowish to red crystalline powder; insoluble in water; soluble in dilute acids, and dilute alkali. It is obtained from the condensation of phthalic anhydride with resorcin on heating. It is used in dying silk and wool. It is the parent compound of eosin. All eosins are bromine derivatives of fluorescin, used in dyeing textiles, ink manufacturing, in coloring cosmetics, in coloring gasoline and as a toner. Eosin is a composition of Wright stain, in modified Nocht's stain and eosin-methylene blue medium.
